Week 3 Physiology:
Formation of Eryrthrocytes (rbc's - no nucleus) Called Erythropoieses
Bone Marrow creates red and white blood cells as well as platelets for clotting. It makes RBC's when there is erythropoitin, a hormone released by the adrenal glands of the kidneys.
The hemoglobin molecule in the RBC's allows oxygen to bind with iron--
**Find image that shows the hemoglobin molecule, how it holds the heme molecule of iron
Anemia- low iron in the blood leading to reduced oxygen for cells. Anemic blood isn't good for recipients.
Why Anemic?
Blood loss
Bone marrow failure
Destruction of RBC's
Loss of Erythropoeitin (biofeedback malfunction)
Lack of Iron and/or B12 and/or folic acid in the diet. Required for erythropoieses
